Books

The  Scary Aunt Sally books are about more than telling stories.  They are about helping children discover that, even when dementia changes someone’s memories, behaviour or ability to communicate, that person still matters and deserves friendship, dignity and kindness.

The first two books are being offered together as part of a special limited-edition launch, available directly through the Shop section of this website while the initial stock lasts.

This is an opportunity to own these early editions while supporting a project that aims to make a positive difference to the way children understand dementia.

Once the limited-edition stock has been sold, this website will continue to introduce the books and their purpose, with links directing readers to Amazon for future purchases.

After production and associated costs, proceeds from book sales will go towards supporting dementia charities and community organisations. In this way, the project aims not only to educate and inspire children but also to make a practical contribution to the lives of people affected by dementia.

SCARY AUNT SALLY

Alice and Tom don't enjoy visiting their mother’s Aunt Sally. She has dementia, doesn't recognise them and can sometimes seem frightening and confusing.

But then they discover some old costumes and photographs from Aunt Sally's past — and something wonderful happens.

Music and memories help Alice and Tom discover the person behind the dementia.

A gentle story about family, memory, music and understanding

"The story is lovely, a really good read and does a lot to dispel some of the fears about dementia and how it affects a person. I love the link to Aunt Sally's past and how this can be bought in to show she is still there and able to engage with things she loves."

Hilda Hayo, CEO and Chief Admiral Nurse, Dementia UK.

SCARY AUNT SALLY and the TIME OUT CLUB

Aunt Sally's story continues as her family, friends and neighbours discover how much can be achieved when a community comes together.

An old miners' hall is brought back to life as a community centre, providing a place where people living with dementia and their carers can meet, have fun and support one another.

“Scary Aunt Sally” and the Time Out Club is a warm, compassionate and deeply moving story that helps children understand dementia and explore feelings of confusion, fear and love. Inspired by real-life experience and the creation of the Time Out Club, it encourages empathy, patience and understanding while celebrating the importance of community and support. A heartfelt and hopeful book that helps families, schools and communities talk about dementia and nurture kindness."
